You have likely heard that the honey bee population is in decline, but you may not know how shocking the facts are. Beekeepers are reporting losses of bee populations at nearly double the historical rates. Around one-third of worldwide food production relies on the pollination services of bees, so it is imperative to take action now to prevent this decline — further loss of bee populations would be catastrophic to our food production.

There are several related factors that have combined to cause honey bee populations to die off. Harmful pesticides and the large corporations that lobby for their use, habitat loss, and climate change are all primary contributing factors to the mass dying-off of bees. While these factors may seem insurmountable to the average person, there are steps we can all take to do our part, such as creating bee gardens and eliminating your pesticide use. One of the most important actions we can take is supporting and donating to local beekeepers — and when you shop with Eco-ACTual®️, 10% of your support goes to doing just that. For further information on the facts and causes of the bee crisis, and what you can do to help, view our blog all about honey bees.

Why is this necessary?

At Eco-ACTual™, we’ve done the research to understand some of the greatest areas of personal waste, and hand-select Companies that work to attack these problems head-on. First and foremost, we are a green company. Our products range from clothing, to reusable bottles and cups, to seemingly small items such as compostable toothbrushes — everything makes a difference! Participating in ethical shopping practices, giving only eco-friendly gifts, and making small changes towards living a sustainable lifestyle can have an enormous impact. Why is this so important?

Combating Plastic Use

While plastic was initially hailed as a miracle material, excess plastic use has revealed itself to be a cause of enormous negative impacts on the planet. With plastic water bottles, what started out as a convenience has turned into an enormous source of waste, a fact especially maddening considering how simple it is to use a reusable bottle instead. Every year, humans produce about 300 million tons of plastic waste. This comes in the forms of one-use bottles, shopping bags, and many other containers that are a constant throughout our daily lives. Only a small percentage of this waste is recycled, while the vast majority — estimated at 79% by the UN Environment Programme — clogs our landfills, oceans, and the natural environment. Once present in the environment, plastic can stay around for centuries without decomposing.

At Eco-ACTual®️, we want to encourage you to be more mindful of your plastic consumption. Pay attention to the plastic waste constantly happening around you — from the use of plastic forks at work, to the amount of plastic bags leaving the grocery store. No one is perfect when it comes to zero-waste living, but it’s very easy to make small changes which can quickly become positive environmental habits. We are proud to feature a wide variety of reusable products in our store such as eco-friendly bags and cups, which can be used to reduce your daily plastic waste.

Combating Fast Fashion

Clothing may not be one of the first topics on your mind when it comes to sources of waste, but the rise of “fast fashion” has had an environmental impact on par with the largest sources of waste. Similar to the production of plastic bottles, production of clothing has rapidly increased in recent decades. While this allows clothing to be cheaper, it also means clothing is now more disposable — clothes are worn for less time, and end up in landfills sooner. Many of these clothes contain polyester, a synthetic material which causes extensive carbon emissions during production and does not break down naturally.

There are several actions you can take to combat the rise of fast fashion, without giving up your style in the process! One method is to be smarter with your clothing purchases, utilizing thrift stores for both buying and selling old clothing. Other steps to take are buying clothing you plan to wear many times, and paying attention to the materials your clothing is made from. As an alternative to polyester, clothing made from natural materials such as cotton, linen, or hemp does not release plastic particles in the laundry and eventually into the ocean. Eco-ACTual™ is proud to only offer environmentally-friendly products in our online clothing store, so you can rest assured you will not only look good, but you will do so in a sustainable way.

Making Smart Purchases

Introducing the concept of minimalism into your life is a simple and effective way to combat waste. Your purchase of a reusable cup rather than single-use cups, or a shirt you will wear many times rather than one you will only wear occasionally, can help towards reducing waste.

Eco-ACTual™ only provides products which fit into your already sustainable lifestyle, or to help you become more environmentally conscious. We want this to extend to your life beyond our store — we could all be doing more to live sustainably, and encouraging others to do the same! That’s why we feature a blog which is regularly updated with information about environmentalism and helpful tips on sustainable living.
